These branches follow Mozilla’s missing-bookmark guidance. They identify possibilities, not the cause of every case.

Check whether the bookmarks are hidden rather than gone

  1. Open the bookmark manager and inspect the folders there. A missing toolbar is not proof that the bookmark set is missing.
  2. If the toolbar alone disappeared, right-click an empty area of the navigation bar and select the bookmark-toolbar option.
  3. If bookmarks were imported, inspect the folder named for the source browser.

Recover lost or missing bookmarks

Stop the recovery process here if the wanted bookmarks are visible. Replacing data to fix a display choice can discard newer bookmarks unnecessarily.

Look for the profile that contains the data

Type about:profiles into Firefox’s address bar. The page identifies the profile currently in use. If another profile exists, Mozilla documents launching it in a separate browser window to inspect its bookmarks. Keep both profiles while you determine which holds the wanted data. Recover lost or missing bookmarks

A profile contains its own user information. Mozilla’s Profile Manager also has default-profile and removal controls; inspection does not require either. If you create a new profile, its default status can change what opens next time, so read the official instructions before using those controls. Create or switch Firefox profiles

Choose an existing recovery source deliberately

If a different profile already contains the wanted bookmarks, using that profile may avoid restoring an older copy. If you instead choose a bookmark backup, compare its date with what is missing and preserve the current bookmark set first. Restore replaces that set; HTML import is a different operation used to combine sets. Restore bookmarks from backup

An Old Firefox Data folder can be relevant after Refresh. For a complete profile copy, follow Mozilla’s manual recovery instructions and their destination-file cautions. Do not move or replace a folder merely because its name resembles another profile.

Choose the copy you actually want to recover

Keep a short inventory before making a change: current profile, any other profile with wanted data, dated bookmark files, and an Old Firefox Data folder if present. Write down which one contains a known bookmark. A folder’s existence alone is not proof of its contents.

  1. If another profile contains the wanted set, open it and verify the bookmarks before choosing it as the default. Keep the other profiles while checking.
  2. If a bookmark backup is needed, preserve the current set, compare dates, then use the bookmark restore steps.
  3. If you have a complete profile copy instead, follow the separate-destination profile procedure and check its version/platform limits.

An example inventory might show a current profile with default bookmarks and an older profile with your known folders. In that case, the useful finding is where the data lives; it does not establish that an update deleted it.

If the current profile has newer bookmarks too

Decide whether you need an old snapshot or a combined set before opening Restore. Preserve the current set first. HTML import can serve a combining task when you have an HTML export. Keep a JSON backup intact and use its supported restoration method; do not rename it as HTML.

If there is no known source for the missing items, stop replacing sets. Keep the candidate profiles and dated files for investigation. A reset is not a recovery source.

Know when the evidence is insufficient

If you cannot identify a profile, backup or device containing the data, recovery remains uncertain. A new reinstall cannot establish that a missing copy exists. Record what is absent, where you checked, the running version and whether other devices still hold the bookmarks. Bring that description to Mozilla Support without posting your profile files, passwords or browsing history.

What our controlled Firefox test showed

The named fake bookmarks were absent from a newly created profile, while the original profile’s bookmark database remained unchanged. This reproduces the distinction between a different profile and deleted source data, using fake data rather than an actual update-loss incident.

Automated checks on Windows with the Playwright-patched Firefox 155.0 engine and Mozilla geckodriver. Fresh profiles and fake data only.

The test notes record the method and results. Bookmark export/import used Firefox’s core APIs; menu instructions are documentation-checked. Built-in Backup, Sync accounts, Refresh and safe-mode restarts were outside the experiments.
