Identify the browser that is actually running
Type about:support into Firefox’s address bar. Read the version under Application Basics. This is useful when two shortcuts appear to open different versions. About Firefox also shows the version, but opening it normally starts an update check. Find your Firefox version
On Windows, a Distribution ID containing mozilla-MSIX identifies the Microsoft Store edition. The profile directory is another piece of installation context; keep personal folder paths out of a public support post. Profiles and stored user data
Find the route for a known installation source
If the browser came directly from Mozilla
- Open the Help menu and choose About Firefox; on macOS, use the Firefox menu.
- Allow the update check and any download to finish.
- Use the offered restart control, then read the version in the running browser again.
If the browser is managed or came from a package provider, use that authority’s route. Update Firefox to the latest release
Match the installation to its updater
| Installation | Where to check | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Downloaded directly from Mozilla | Firefox’s own update controls; restart when requested. | Read the running version after the restart. |
| Microsoft Store on Windows | Microsoft Store updates, rather than assuming Mozilla’s installer instructions apply. | Check the installed Store app and the version Firefox reports. |
| Linux distribution or DEB/RPM repository | The package manager and the configured repository. | Check which repository supplies this package. |
| Linux Snap or Flatpak | The relevant package system. | Identify that package before following update guidance. |
| Managed by work or school | The administrator responsible for this installation. | Ask about the approved version and update policy. |
Mozilla distinguishes Store and distribution installations from its own updater. Its Linux guide documents several package routes, so one command cannot cover them all. Update Firefox to the latest release · Install Firefox on Linux
Keep source, channel and profile separate
An installation source answers “who supplies this application?” A channel answers “which release stream is it on?” A profile holds the browser’s personal state. You need these distinctions when a new installation appears empty or a version number differs from a headline. Compare Release and ESR before considering a channel change; investigate the active profile if data seems missing.
When the update still does not complete
| Observation | Next question |
|---|---|
| No update control in packaged Linux Firefox | Which installed package and repository supplies this application? |
| Different versions through different shortcuts | Do the shortcuts launch different installations? |
| About says current but asks for a restart | Has the new version actually been launched? |
| A work device rejects the change | What version and policy does the administrator approve? |
| An explicit download or installation error | What is the exact error and which updater produced it? |
Keep the exact message. If you cannot identify the source, avoid switching packages or channels as a guess. The installation matrix identifies ownership; an error-specific repair needs its own supported explanation.
Keep a record of the running copy
Record the product, running version, channel if known, operating system, update source, and whether an administrator manages it. Leave unknown fields unknown. Check the version in the same running copy after the change; an installer finishing does not identify the browser behind a different shortcut.
Confirm that the update is in use
A downloaded update and a restarted browser are different states. Mozilla says an update can still be downloading in the background even when an About window appears current. Follow the requested restart, then check the running version. Update Firefox to the latest release
Illustrative example: a Store-installed Firefox and a separate Mozilla-installed Firefox are two update responsibilities. Updating one does not establish which shortcut you launched. If the version is current but a website is broken, record the symptom and use the one-site troubleshooting guide instead of repeating the updater.
